Virginia Beach firefighters screen for esophageal cancer

Firefighters in Virginia Beach and Portsmouth are being screened for esophageal cancer due to their 62% higher risk. The Virginia Beach Professional Fire and EMS Union Hall provided the EsoGuard DNA test for esophageal precancer, with Union President Max Gonano among the first to be screened. Education on cancer risks is a priority, and last year, the fire department offered multi-cancer early detection screenings. Fire investigator Matt Gallina discovered his esophageal cancer through such a test and is undergoing treatment. The EsoGuard test involves collecting esophageal cells via a capsule on a thin tube, with results in two to three weeks.
