New technology helps screen SC firefighters for pre-cancer
Anderson County, SC firefighters were offered esophageal pre-cancer screenings using the EsoGuard DNA test, at an event organized by Honea Path Fire Chief and physician Jimmy Smith. The screening involves swallowing a balloon-equipped capsule to collect esophageal cells, a process taking about five minutes. Firefighters have a 62% higher risk of esophageal cancer due to toxic materials in modern building materials. Anderson City Fire Chief Charlie King emphasized the importance of early detection. Smith noted that early diagnosis and treatment can prevent the progression to fatal cancer. The screenings are also recommended for individuals with risk factors, such as family history.
