Chesapeake firefighters attack an increased cancer risk with early detection screening

At least 75 Chesapeake firefighters will be screened for esophageal cancer due to their 62% higher risk. The Professional Fire Fighters of Chesapeake IAFF Local 2449 partnered with Lucid Diagnostics to offer the EsoGuard test for early detection. The test collects cells from the lower esophagus, with results available in two to three weeks. Chief Sam Gulisano emphasized the importance of early detection and treatment. The initiative follows similar efforts in Virginia Beach and Portsmouth, addressing the high cancer risk among firefighters due to exposure to carcinogens.
